Tampere of the Future
Participate and make a difference
The city works on its new strategy this year
The City of Tampere is writing a new strategy document this year. The entire city is invited to join the work to create the new City Strategy. Tampere inhabitants have several ways of participating in the preparatory work for the strategy.
The City Strategy is a long-term plan for the City of Tampere, collecting the broad guidelines of the city’s management and development over the coming years.
The strategy defines the vision of Tampere, the city it wants to be in the future. It also enumerates its focus points, the goals it must especially meet to succeed in carrying out its vision for the future. The guidelines will impact the lives of every Tampere inhabitant.
Conversations on the future have begun
The preparatory work of the new City Strategy of Tampere has started. During the beginning of the year, broad conversations have been started about the future of Tampere and the phenomena that impact it. These future-themed discussions are open to the entire city: decision-makers, city personnel, stakeholders, and inhabitants.
The conversations evaluate the current City Strategy and build up a comprehensive picture of the current state of the City’s work, as well as where Tampere has succeeded and what challenges it has encountered over the past several years.
The future phenomena that the city must foresee to succeed will also be brought up in the discussions. Among such local, national, and global phenomena are the aging of the population, the economic situation of the city, the social and health care services reform, as well as climate change.
Involving inhabitants in working for the future
Tampere inhabitants have several ways of participating in the preparatory work for the strategy.
In March and April, the Future of Tampere survey is open to all. Discussions on the future will take place over the spring with groups including, but not limited to the aged, immigrants, those with developmental disabilities, and those in rehabilitation after substance abuse or mental health problems. Children and youth can also make their voice heard. Also being heard are the city’s decision-making institutions and representative councils, such as the NGO Representative Council and the Youth Council.
The new city council will guide the work
The common vision built up during the conversations will be crystallised in the new City Strategy of Tampere. The new city council, elected in the spring’s municipal elections, will guide the work to finalize the strategy. The objective is that the council can decide to adopt the strategy in the fall of 2021.
